Nakate Class - Year 5 - Miss Seaman

Vanessa Nakate

Ugandan climate activist

"Your actions matter. No action or voice is too small to make a difference."  Vanessa Nakate

Vanessa Nakate is a Ugandan climate activist. Nakata works to bring attention to the lack of African representation in the global climate change movement. She found the Rise Up Movement to raise awareness about climate change in Africa.

Nakate became concerned about climate change after she had a conversation with her uncle about how hot it was in Uganda compared to 20 years previous. She realised that the impact of climate change could be seen everywhere. There were floods, landslides, and droughts, but there was not much awareness about climate change among most Ugandans. After learning about Greta Thunberg's Friday for Future strikes, Nakata decided to join the movement and organise a strike.

Nakate kept striking despite little support from others apart from her siblings. She persevered so that she could bring attention to deforestation of the Congo rainforest as the Amazon rainforest was already well covered. Her work began to attract attention worldwide and in 2019 she was invited to speak at the United Nations climate talks.

Nakate also talks about the removal of Black and African voices from climate activism conversations. The global response was supportive and she soon became one of the lead African activists in the climate movement.

Learning about Vanessa Nakate will encourage our class to find their own voice and discuss what is important to them. She will allow us to think about positive changes and dedicate time to climate and environmental issues as well as equality and inclusion within the community.
