Art and Design

‘Every human is an artist’ -Don Miguel Ruiz

Purpose of Study

Our high quality art and design education will enable pupils to critically explore a range of historical and contemporary artists, designers, craft makers and architects from a range of cultural backgrounds. Art and design teaching will develop a passion for creativity, enabling children to develop their skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art. Our curriculum will equip children with the skills to experiment and create their own work of art, exploring ideas and recording their experiences. Pupils will become skilled in using the language of art and design in order to evaluate and analyse their own artwork and the artwork of their peers.

Aims

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all :

  • Children will learn about the work of contemporary and historical artists, designers, craft makers and understand the historical and cultural significance of the work
  • Children will develop skills in a range of medias so that they can proficiently use them to create a piece of work
  • Children will use sketchbooks to record their ideas and experiment with different techniques which then leads to them producing a final outcome
  • Children will use the language of art to analyse and evaluate their own work and the work of others
  • Children will become confident in using a range of medias to communicate and express themselves

Organisation

  • Art and design will be taught on alternate half terms in KS1 and KS2. In the half-term it is taught, there will be a weekly art lesson.
  • In EYFS, there will be specific taught sessions of art and design each half term and children will also have access to a range of materials as part of the continuous provision.
  • Wherever possible, cross-curricular links will be made to year-group topics.
  • Each unit of teaching will have a focus on a specific media and artist or designer.
  • Each unit will involve children learning a new technique and refining their skills using a new media. This will be documented in sketchbooks (particularly in KS2).
  • At the end of each unit of work, children will produce a final outcome. This will be produced outside of their sketchbooks.
