The Royal Opera House-The Nutcracker

December 2023

In December our Year 5 and 6 children visited the Royal Opera House in London to watch a performance of the Royal Ballet's Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker tells the tale of a child named Clara who, during a Christmas Eve party, experiences a magical journey of adventure once everyone else is fast asleep. Clara and her enchanted Nutcracker fight the Mouse King and visit the Sugar Plum Fairy in the glittering Kingdom of Sweets. This fairy tale is told through a ballet performance, this is accompanied by an orchestra performing classical music written by Tchaikovsky.

This was an opportunity to find out about performing arts and how music and dance can be used to tell a story. The visit also inspired reading and writing back in school. Look out for the selection of Nutcracker books in our Library too!

We had an incredible time in London, for some of us it was our very first visit-it was a great opportunity to see some of London's famous landmarks too. We travelled past sights such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and The Shard-it was amazing to see these buildings in real life.
