Cultural Capital

“The point of my work is to show that culture and education aren’t simply hobbies or minor influences. They are hugely important in the affirmation of differences between groups and social classes and in the reproduction of those differences.” - Pierre Bourdieu.

Purpose of study

To encourage Cultural Learning at our school, we instil the knowledge, behaviour and skills that children can develop and utilise to become culturally aware. It is one of the fundamental components that children will draw upon to be successful in society, future careers and the world of work. Cultural Learning promotes pupil power to help them achieve goals and understand the desire to aspire and achieve social mobility regardless of their starting point. It is vital to introduce our children to the best that has been thought and said, whilst appreciating others’ creativity and achievements.

Aims

At Spring Meadow, we recognise that there are six key areas of development that intertwine to contribute to a child’s Cultural Learning. We also acknowledge that each subject curriculum will make its own contribution to children’s Cultural Learning development and support Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development across the school.
