During our RE lessons we learnt about the Hindu festival of Holi. The children got to have a turn themselves at throwing colourful powder paint.
As part of our 'Authors' topic Coral were inspired to draw their own Quentin Blake illustrations.
As part of our Healthy Eating topic in Science, the children made their own healthy pizzas using wholemeal pitta bread. The children enjoyed eating their pizzas at the end of the lesson.

Welcome to Year 2!

Undoubtedly Year 2 is a year of many transitions for the children. The children are starting to become more independent and have more responsibility. It is a year where they will encounter new and interesting experiences.  The Year 2 team work very hard to support the children wherever possible during this sometimes tricky period after a move from Year 1. We are keen to promote a positive learning environment where all children feel safe and secure. We encourage the children to try their best at all times and to have an ‘I can attitude’ towards meeting their own individual targets. We ensure that all children are supported and we regularly use practical and hands on learning approaches to aid the needs of all children. We are all looking forward to the exciting year that lies ahead.

Support at home – Reading

Reading at home is vital to your child’s reading understanding and development in reading. There is a reward system already in place to encourage children to read at least 3 times a week at home. You can support your child at home by developing their daily reading and comprehension skills. This can be completed in a number of ways including:

  • Focusing on your child’s understanding of a text
  • Exploring a wide range of texts
  • Discussing text features and focusing on language use.
  • In the front of your child’s reading diary there is a target sheet for you and your child’s reference. Adults in school use WWW (what went well) and EBI (even better if) to provide feedback relating to the child’s reading targets, these are shared with every child each time they read.

Times Tables
Regular practise of times tables will reinforce your child’s numerical ability and will allow them to thrive in their learning environment. Try to make this as fun as possible – try playing games etc.

Spelling continues to be an area of focus for Year 2, please encourage your children to participate in engaging and fun spelling activities, word searches, and putting spellings into a sentence. These activities all make children consider the meaning of the word and to explore relevant spelling patterns. In Year 2 it is the expectation that by the end of the year all children should be able to read and spell the ‘Common Exception Words’.

Our PE days are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday please ensure that your child has a full PE kit for both in and outdoor PE and that it is in school all week.

Your child will be given weekly homework to build on the work that we have been looking in the classroom. It will usually be a literacy task, based on our termly topics, such as the Houses and Homes. The children will also be given a numeracy activity to complete. Exciting challenges are also set weekly for the children to complete. The expectation is for both pieces to be completed by the child with care and pride. Homework is given out every Monday and is due in on the following Monday, this allows a full week for homework to be completed. At the end of each half term prizes will be awarded to children that have gone the extra mile in their homework.
