What have we learnt about China?

Picture 1
As our class is named after China, throughout the year we will be learning about it. Here's what we've learnt so far.

Location of China

In Geography, we learnt that China is located in the continent of Asia. We had a go at finding China on the globe and we also located China's capital city - Beijing. We then used atlases to find out which countries share a border China. Did you know there are 14 countries which share a border with China? Can you name them?

Willow Pattern

In art, we have learnt about Chinese Willow Pattern. This is a blue and white pattern which was used to decorate ceramics (bowls and plates) and became popular in Britain in the 1900s. The most famous willow pattern illustrates an ancient story called 'The Fable of Two Doves'. We produced our own line drawings of this design and then added colour. Here is some of our willow pattern artwork on display:

Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rat

Of course we had to learn about Chinese New Year! We began by learning about the Chinese Zodiac Story. We have just completed a unit on historical narratives in English, so this gave us the perfect opportunity to apply what we had learnt by writing a narrative based on the Chinese Zodiac Story. Here are some examples of our writing:

We also learnt about Chinese paper-cutting. This is an ancient art-form thought to have originated in China about 1,500 years ago. We watched videos of Chinese craftsmen and women producing paper cuttings. We were amazed at how skilled they are and how detailed the designs are. As this year is the year of the rat, we had a go at producing our own rat paper-cutting stencils by producing line drawings of our designs. We decided to add colour to our work - rather than cut them out. Here are some examples of our designs:

Religion

In RE lessons during Spring Term, we have been learning about Buddhism, which is one of the main religions followed by Chinese people. China has more Buddhists than any other country in the world. First of all we learnt about the Eightfold Path. These are a set of eight rules which Buddhist's follow. Here are some examples of our work:

Next we learnt about the story of the 'Buddha and the Angry Elephant'. We considered how the Buddha had followed the Eightfold Path to help him to make good choices. Some of us even considered how Devadatta's actions showed that he hadn't followed the Eightfold Path. Below are some examples of what we thought about the story.
