Revisit: Using the attached PowerPoint, identify each of the phase 5 sounds.

 

Teach: Today we will be looking at the grapheme ‘ou’. This sound can can be pronounced differently in different words, for example it makes an

  • ‘ow’ sound in out,
  • A long ‘oo’ sound in you, and
  • A short ‘oo’ sound in could.

 

Practise: Draw a table with three columns. At the top of each column, label them ‘ow’, long ‘oo’ and short ‘oo’. Then sort the words below according to the pronunciation of the ou grapheme.
