World Book Day
'a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel.'
But just how short can a short story be?
It is rumoured that Ernest Hemingway - a very famous, American writer - wrote the shortest story ever written when he was just 10 years old.
The story was just 6 words long and was influenced by a very tragic real-life event.
Can you write a story in just 6 words?
Remember, a short story must have a theme and take the reader on a journey. It needs to be carefully planned and cleverly constructed. Give it a go! Will yours be a tragedy like Hemingway's? Or will you choose to write a comedy, fantasy, adventure story or even a poem?
The Shortest Poem
We recently came across the shortest poem ever written. It was written by George Macdonald in 1893 and Miss Ford even loved it so much that she painted it on a stone from Dovercourt beach and displayed it on a shelf in her living room (see below) Doesn't it look great!? Will you choose to display your short story in a similar way? Remember, simple techniques can be extremely effective!
