Numeracy

Learning objective: I can draw 2D shapes on a grid.

I have put some words in bold and I would like you to think about what they mean.

Draw means to make lines on paper with a pen or pencil.

2D shapes are completely flat, they have sides and vertices. An example of a 2D shape is a triangle.

A grid is formed of lines or squares and is useful for showing us the location of places or objects.

In focus: Look at the image below. What shapes can you draw on the grid? Discuss this with somebody at home. Let’s learn: Let’s look at the in focus together. There are lots of different shapes that we could draw on the grid paper, such as a square or a triangle. When using a grid, it makes it easier for us to make our shapes exact. We can start by drawing the vertices as this will help us to understand where the lines for the sides of the shape need to go. By marking out the vertices first, it can help us to see if our shape is going to be formed correctly when we draw on the sides. Looking at the image below, we can see that the vertices are equally spaced and the shape is going to have 4 equal sides, so it is an accurately drawn square. Drawing the vertices first is also useful when copying shapes, we can look at where the vertices are on the original shape and can count how far apart they are to help us mark out our own vertices. For example, looking at the square below, we can see that each vertex is 3 squares apart and we can use this knowledge to start to form our own copy.
