A day in the life of Year 1:
Year 1 is one of the biggest transitions your child will go through in their primary education. As a team we try to make this transition as smooth as possible in order to ensure your child feels happy and safe in their new learning environment. For the first term your children will experience learning similar to Reception following the elements of free flow activities, continuous role play opportunities and access to outdoor learning. They will however, be expected to undergo focused learning for around 15-20 minutes at a time. This focused learning will then progress throughout the year until eventually children can be focused as a class. As a team we aim to stretch and challenge children to the best of their abilities, putting in strategies to support individual needs as they are needed and we hope to have your support in this progression too.

It is expected that your child completes one piece of homework a week. This is to be given in every Monday and activities can be found on the sheet provided by the class teacher. We hope that you enjoy completing this homework with your child as it is not expected that they do these tasks independently. This gives you a chance to engage in their learning and support them along the way. Children will undergo a spelling test every Monday so please practise these with your child in the week. The words given to children are expected to be learnt by the END of Year 1 as there has been a move in the expectations on children in this year group. Once your child has learnt to spell all of the spellings provided, they will be given new spellings to learn. Handwriting is also something that the school is working towards developing in order to ensure the best results for your children. Therefore, sheets will be sent home for children to practise formation and this will also be taught as part of our daily routine.
Reading and word boxes:
As a school we aim to develop a pleasure in reading and we hope to gain your support in this too. It is suggested that you read with your child three times a week and record your comments on how they are progressing in their reading records. Word boxes are checked at school and should be practised at home too. Once your child has read all words correctly three times, they will move up a word box.
ALL children are expected to have the full indoor P.E. kit consisting of; Shorts, T-shirt and plimsolls. They will also need a warmer change of sports clothes for outdoor P.E. in the colder months. Children are NOT to wear any jewellery on their days of P.E. ALL hair should be tied back too. Children are expected to be able to dress and undress themselves. Therefore, we would appreciate your support in helping your child to develop this independence.
